Lindsey Graham has vociferously opposed efforts by the Democrats of the House of Representatives to impeach President Trump. He has supported the President’s refusal to respond to subpoenas and its blocking of testimony by administration officials. That’s today.
However, as is often the case in these times, there is a video from the past. It turned up on Twitter and stands in contrast to the current Lindsey Graham. In the video, Sen. Lindsey Graham, who was talking about Bill Clinton at the time, said that ignoring a subpoena was an impeachable offense. Which of the Lindsey Grahams are we to believe?
The video was originally circulated by the Republican Rule of Law campaign group. It goes back to the 1990’s when Congressman Graham was a manager during the impeachment of Bill Clinton. Anti-Trump conservative journalist, Bill Krystol, picked it up and re-posted it on his Twitter account.
Here’s Lindsey Graham from back then: “Article Three of impeachment against Richard Nixon, the Article was based on the idea that Richard Nixon as president failed to comply with subpoenas of Congress.
“Congress was going through its oversight function to provide oversight of the president. When asked for information Richard Nixon chose not to comply and the Congress back in that time said you’re taking impeachment away from us.
“You’re becoming the judge and jury. It is not your job to tell us what we need, it is your job to comply with the things we need to provide oversight over you.
“The day Richard Nixon failed to answer that subpoena is that day that he was subject to impeachment because he took the power from Congress over the impeachment process away from Congress and he became the judge and jury.”
