Is Selena Gomez Starting a Cosmetics Company?

by TJM

It’s been a quiet summer for Selena Gomez. No new music, not much action on social media, but she has been working on a new project under the radar, sort of. It has been reported by Women’s Wear Daily that Gomez has filed a trademark through the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for the name “Selena Gomez”. While she hasn’t promoted anything new or said anything about the trademark, the name was pretty telling that she’s up to something.

Gomez is up to a bunch of things in fact, along the lines of cosmetology. The trademark was filed for perfumes, coognes, aftershaves, cosmetics, skin and hair care, nail products, essential oils, soaps, body lotions, fragrances, and more! Sounds like a whole “Selena Gomez” beauty and self care line is in the works. Selena still hasn’t commented on the subject so we expect it to be at least a year before anything gets officially released to market.

With some new music reported to be on the way this fall, and now a possible announcement of a new line of cosmetic products looming, Gomez’s busy summer might be shifting into a very busy fall.

VHS Tapes Are Selling For Thousand Of Dollars On eBay – Do You Have Any?

by TJM

Looking to make a couple extra bucks for a family vacation, pay the bills, or having some extra gas money? Well, you could look into selling some old VHS tapes. Yup, thats right, VHS tapes have carved out a little market for themselves in the online trading world of eBay, and you will be shocked for how much some of these tapes are going for.

Apparently out of Australia a report stated that a 1999 Special Edition copy of Mulan in mint condition was sold for over $20,000! A set of seven Disney classics, Black Diamond edition, which included Bambi and Aladdin sold for $18,000. A 1990 VHS of the Little Mermaid sold for $15,000 and 1992 version of Beauty and the Beast Black Diamond edition sold for $10 G’s. New data has revealed that almost 250,000 VHS tapes have been sold online over the last year, and over $3 million dollars has been spent on VHS tapes in that time.

Why the sudden spike in value and demand for these classic films. Well for starters, Disney has been cranking out remakes of their old movies like Fords on an assembly line. This alone has raised the value of older tapes that will never be produced again in the VHS versions like the originals. While very few people these days even own a VHS player, that shouldn’t stop you from trying to make a couple extra bucks selling the tapes online.

Bebe Rexha Slams Exec, Claims There’s No Age That You Can’t Be Sexy

by TJM

Singer Bebe Rexha posted on Instagram and Twitter that she is being called “too old to be sexy”. In a rather, sexy, picture on her instagram that shows her in her bra and undies with a black and white filter, she goes on to share the story of a Male Exec saying she was too old to be posting sexy pictures. The post was rather long and direct and touched on her current age (almost 30) and how she is tired of women who get older being labeled as such.

Fans naturally showed their support to the social media posts, popping in with positive comments and women empowerment dialogue. Clearly Bebe is trying to do the same with her recent comments. In one of the captions she wrote “Empower women to love their bodies instead of making girls and women feel less by their size”. Age truly is only a number, and it is how you feel that is most important. There is no doubt Rexha is feeling good about turning 30 and does not care what people think about her age in regards to her brand and image.

She closed her post by saying. “TRUST ME, I’m a much better lover than I was 10 years ago.”

Justin and Hailey Bieber Planning “Small” Second Wedding

by TJM

Justin Bieber and his supermodel wife Hailey Bieber had a secret wedding ceremony back in September of 2018 to officially get hitched. Now they want to have an actual wedding ceremony, but they plan to keep it small. The couple are looking at fall dates, and the location still has not been decided upon by the power couple. While we expect the wedding to be of the smaller variety, it is hard to know how small is small for a couple of their pedigree. Those details should unfold in the coming weeks.

Bieber has been focusing on his mental health over the last few months and on being the best father and husband he can be. He has not had a new album in a few years but recently just dropped a new song with Ed Sheeran called “Love Yourself”. The title of the song certainly fits in line with Bieber’s new focus on mental health. For the Biebers, having a second wedding should be no big deal, while the normal couple would be hurting just to pay for one!

We’ll keep monitoring the unfolding situation with the Bieber Wedding “take two”. Check back in for more updates.

Are Animal Movies Good for the Animals They Depict?

by E.B.

The movie Finding Dory did not increase demand for blue tang fish, instead it created more awareness about the species. Warnings that this would happen are because of reports that the movie Finding Nemo inspired increased demand for clown fish. Results from University of Oxford research show that there’s no link between blockbuster movies and demand for wildlife. Instead, these blockbuster films sometimes inspire viewers to learn more about the animals they depict.

In the past media sources have made false accusations of film influences on consumer behavior. These accusations were often made against very famous movies such as Harry Potter and Jurassic Park. This same research group at Oxford will be researching the impact of environmental BBC documentaries such as Blue Planet on plastics and Black Fish on attitudes towards cetacean (a type of aquatic mammal) captivity.

Google’s AI Breast Cancer Diagnosis Works in Real Time

by E.B.

According to MIT Technology Review, one of Google’s deep learning artificial intelligence (AI) programs called Lymph Node Assistant has already been better at diagnosing breast cancer than human doctors since October 2018. Google trained an algorithm to understand which breast cancer tumors have spread. 90 percent of breast cancer deaths occur because of the spreading of breast cancer tumors which is called metastasis.

Now Google AI can detect and diagnosis tumors in real time through its “augmented reality microscope.” This device is a microscope with a camera and running AI software inside. The camera continuously takes photos of body tissue under the microscope. Allegedly the program then provides real time insight onto a screen about whether areas are benign or malignant. The details of this microscope have been published in a paper in Nature recently. This new breakthrough will help doctors treat patients in ways that are faster and more successful.

Facebook is Designing a “Dark Mode” for Scrolling Your News Feed Late at Night

by E.B.

Many social media services have developed dark modes for using their websites at night. The glare of a bright screen at night usually puts a strain on a person’s eyes. Twitter and Gmail already offer Dark Mode settings and Facebook already has it for its Messenger app. According to software engineer Jane M. Wong, Facebook proper is already using an early version of Dark Mode, but it will take a while for this idea to be fully implemented.

Facebook frequently tests new features without making it obvious. However, the company doesn’t have set timelines for when new features are released. This new feature may negatively contribute to the problem of tech addiction. Daytime addiction to social media is already common among web users. Only time will tell if social media companies will ever begin to take the problem of tech addiction seriously.

Amazon Launches Massive Digital Ad Spending Increase to Overtake Netflix

by E.B.

In the first half of 2019 Amazon doubled its digital ad spending relative to its 2018 spending levels. Amazon also increased TV spending by 28% for Amazon Prime Video. Amazon Prime Video launched 13 new campaigns for original shows in the first half of 2019. Many other companies in the world of big media are making similar investments. Disney and Apple are planning to launch separate streaming services in the fall.

One of Amazon’s big advantages is its more than 100 million Amazon Prime members in the United States. Netflix’s subscriptions in the US fell from 60.2 million in the first quarter to 60.1 million in the second quarter. This might mean that Amazon has space to catch up to its competition.

Streaming Rights for Classic Shows are Big Business for Netflix and Hulu

by E.B.

Companies such as Comcast, Warner Media and Walt Disney are trying to compete with Netflix in their video streaming services. In order to do this, they are looking at the rights to use Seinfeld, a hugely famous retired comedy show which is has its streaming rights up for sale again. Seinfeld  has been available for streaming on Hulu since 2015. Retired shows with well-established fame are heavily competed over between streaming companies; these shows include not only Seinfeld, but also the Office and Friends. Netflix has given much trouble to the traditional TV industry by offering a streaming alternative to the traditional method of distribution.

Hulu’s ownership of streaming rights to Seinfeld ends in 2021. Sony Pictures Television handles the distribution of streaming rights to Seinfeld. The company is already getting calls about these rights. The bidding process for the Seinfeld streaming rights is expected to begin in the next few weeks. Netflix has already been beat by competition for streaming rights for the Office and Friends. NBCUniversal bought streaming rights for the Office for the next five years for $500 million. Warner Media paid $425 million for five years of streaming rights over Friends. The future will show how much profit these streaming rights will generate for these massive companies.
